One girl, infinite adventures… ain’t that the truth!!! This blog is about to undergo its third transformation. Focus: TBD. Until then, please read about my previous journeys… ok, wait – the breast cancer one isn’t over. I don’t think it will ever be over. So really, all posts after March 2012 probably have something about breast cancer in them…
The breast cancer blog – March 2012 through April 2014; March 2012: I started this blog in May 2010, as I prepared to move home from London and completely change my life – see May 2010 entry below. Now, barely two years later, my life is completely changing again. Only this time it’s not my choice, I have virtually no control over it. It’s happening to me and I can do nothing but face it. And ‘it’ is breast cancer. One of the only things I CAN do is document it – hence Amy’s America evolving into a life journey blog rather than a travel blog. If you really just want to know about my cross-country trip, please skip to the entries from May 2010 – December 2010. But if you want to hear about the much more challenging journey I’m now taking, read on…
The road trip blog – May 2010 – December 2011; May 2010: It’s me time – and I’m going to try to find me on the road. It may be my only chance and I’d better take it. Following a brilliant two-year adventure in London, my son Nick and I moved home to the U.S. in August. Nick started college in September, while I left my job after 15 years with the same wonderful company. Before I face reality and start a new job (Nick says I have to – he doesn’t want to be poor), I’m taking a few months to focus on me. I plan to renew my acquaintance with the land of the free and the home of the brave by driving around the entire country (well, entire if you don’t count Alaska and Hawaii) by myself. I’m not really sure yet where I’m going, not to mention how smart (or safe) it is for a single 30-something woman to drive cross-country solo. And I have no idea what I’ll encounter along the way, but I’m ready and willing to find out. Follow my journey, give me advice and laugh (and probably cry) with me along the way. One girl, one car, one country.
Note: All thoughts, comments, opinions are my own, and do not reflect those of my employer. (I am very proud to work for Sanofi Oncology, working every day to improve the lives of people with cancer.)
OM GOSH ! I had no idea of what you have been going through! What an amazing smile you have on Instagram ! Never give up !
Aw, thank you so much! I definitely won’t!!! 🙂
Need to know: what came of your cross-country journey?
Mike
Hi Mike,
Thank you for asking about the road trip!!! It was such an incredible experience – 83 days on the road mostly by myself. Sounds like such a long time, but it went by in a blink. Was too short, really, and I missed so many things. But what really mattered wasn’t the places but the people. I got to visit with so many people from all parts of my life, from old friends to distant relatives, and made some new friends along the way. Hearing their stories in their surroundings was the very best part of the experience. If you want details, feel free to click on any of the entries from Sept 2010 to Dec 2010 – I blogged about it nearly every day…
Cheers,
Amy
I’m happy that you started following me. I’m looking forward to reading… Your infinite adventures. 🙂
I just found your blog tonight and am already impressed with your courage and tenacity to not take life sitting down. I am so sorry to hear of your breast cancer. Unexpected trials in life can really derail us, but it sounds like you are using it as your tailwind to continue the path of following your dream. Can’t wait to hear about your journey. May God keep you safe! (as our family always says:)
Thank you so much Kristi – I really appreciate it! And I love your family saying. 🙂
What an awesome adventure!.. I applaud you doing something that so many people never get the chance to do. And the good ole USA has so many hidden gems that getting off the beaten path is a must if you are going to experience the culture of the locals. Ive traveled from coast to coast and lived in the South, East and Western US..If your are heading to Missouri or Cali let me know Ive got lots of adventures and must see’s!.. Cheers!!
Thank you very much! I will be heading to Cali (already went through Missouri), so please do let me know all your recommendations! The route is ever changing!
Hi Amy,
I am so very excited for you. I know this will be an exciting and memorable journey filled with adventure, laughter, and introspection. You are an amazing, spirited individual who has worked so hard and accomplished what many can only dream of despite meeting unexpected detours and bumpy roads along the way.
You are awesome. Super human almost. I wish for you a safe, awe-inspiring road trip to find everything you are passionate about and all that you have dreamed of. Stop an smell every rose, appreciate the beautiful visions that will surround you, and take time for someone very special. 🙂
Awww, thanks Heather! I hope you know how much I’ve learned from you, my inspiring friend! (If only you could’ve been a teen mom before me I would’ve known the best way to handle it all!) Now I want you to think about where in the US you want to join me – we are WAY over due for a fabulous girls-only weekend!
Hey Amy – traveling is the best! Ed and I have totally enjoyed it. We are traveling again – short one at the moment down to Asheville, NC and Virginia and then back home till we head to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. We will think about our cross country trip over the next couple days and get back to you with anything that we think you shouldn’t miss. I’m glad to hear you are taking time for yourself.
Ooh, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia – I’ve always wanted to go there! However, I’m going to save most of our northeast corner and Canada for later and devote most of this trip to the long-distance states. I would really love any suggestions/tips you and Ed have, since you’re experts on road trips! And I’m very glad you were able to break away from the office and get back on the road, too!
